Voices for National Service Capitol Hill Day
Thursday, September 15, 2011
9:00AM - 5:00PM
Washington, D.C.
We did it. During the 2011 federal budget debate, we showed lawmakers just how important the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is to communities across the country. We fought back efforts to eliminate CNCS and we raised awareness for service and volunteerism to a new level.
Now, with the 2012 budget debate underway, we need to stand up again and urge Congress to protect the federal investment in CNCS. The Voices for National Service Capitol Hill Day helps to establish and strengthen relationships with our legislators and provides an excellent opportunity for constituents to explain how CNCS funds are being used locally. The meetings on Capitol Hill are a critical opportunity to share with Congress how national service participants are helping to address America’s most pressing needs during this economic downturn.
As pressure builds to control spending and cut the deficit, Congress will be forced to make really tough decisions about funding priorities. It is critically important that we meet with our legislators; explain that national service organizations create jobs, leverage $800 million annually in private and philanthropic dollars, and provide $2.01 worth of service for each federal dollar invested; and stress the impact of national service in our communities.
Please register early to secure your place and to give us sufficient notice of your planned participation. We want to maximize interest and schedule a productive day of meetings for as many constituents as possible.
We expect that all Hill Day participants will make themselves available for the full day from 9:00AM-5:00PM. No experience is necessary to participate, and all Hill Day teams will be assigned a Meeting Captain, a returning participant who is knowledgeable about the legislative process and the Voices for National Service agenda.
